Maybe you have just purchased your first ever tarot deck, or you came across a new deck you simply had to have to add to your collection, either way cleansing a new card deck is a vital ritual. Preparing a new deck helps you establish a connection with your cards and clear any lingering energies from previous handlers or environments.

Cleansing methods vary depending on who you ask, I have always preferred to place the deck in my right hand then use my left hand (your intuitive hand) to cover the cards. I close my eyes, take a few cleansing breaths and when I feel centred and calm, I inwardly say the following to myself “Guides please help me to fill these cards with my own white healing light so that I may use them to gain guidance and insight from spirit to help all those who seek it from me”. I then proceed to individually separate and feel each card in the deck whilst simultaneously repeating this phrase. I then shuffle the cards and repeat the phrase until I feel that they have been cleansed, are filled with my energy and are ready to connect with myself, my guides and the work we need to do.

This is just my method, but its definitely not the only method. If it seems right for you then great! But if it doesn’t below are some other ways of cleansing and preparing your deck.

Setting Your Intention: Before beginning, focus on what you want to achieve with your tarot readings. Hold the deck in your hands, close your eyes, and visualize your intention. This could be clarity, insight, or simply a deep connection with your cards.
Use of Natural Elements: One popular method is to cleanse the deck with the four elements—earth, air, fire, and water. For earth, bury the deck in salt for a few hours. For air, waft incense or sage smoke over the cards. For fire, quickly pass each card over a candle flame, taking care not to burn them. For water, lightly sprinkle the cards with water or use a crystal bowl to gently place them around water.
Sound Cleansing: Another method is using sound to clear energies. Ring a bell or a singing bowl over your deck to cleanse with sound vibrations.
Moonlight Bath: Place your deck under the light of the full moon overnight. This method not only cleanses but also charges the cards with lunar energy, enhancing their intuitive power.
Naturally, these methods will work for Tarot, Lenormand, Oracle or any other kind of cards you wish to work with.
